You’ll probably have heard disaster tales about getting hindered with a cowboy tradesman or mechanic, make more catastrophes than they repair and costing you a ransom in the meantime. Dangerous tradesmen are everywhere and plumbing is the same, but, when selecting a plumber it will be especially vital to make sure you spend a bit of time vetting to get it the best result you can.

Leaking gas is a flammable, highly explosive material and can result in severe damage to not just parts of buildings but houses, streets, villages and even towns. A largegas leak can cause an explosion but a poorly burning cooker or gas fire or a gas unit with an inadequately ventilating flue can cause carbon monoxide poisoning which would end a life in a couple of minutes. All of the above dangers show the need to employ a dependable, experienced and able gas heating engineer or plumber.

Gas Safe Registered

Make sure whichever plumber you choose is Gas Safe registered. The gas safe register lists competent engineers that have passed the necessary test and is confirmed as eligible to work with gas based utilities and appliances. The plumber should have an identity card with their registered number on and should also be located on file on the gas safe register. Replacing Corgi means the old Corgi certification is no longer in use. Every bit of gas work done by a unregistered tradesman is legally an illegal offence. For you, the client, this means any problems which appears as a result is uninsured.

Plumbing Charges & Costs

Even though your chosen plumbing engineer is on the Gas Safe register there is still more investigation to be done. A number of plumbing jobs can result with an increased invoice full of overpriced parts and costs which have been plucked from nowhere. Ideally, when the plumber has assessed the job you have to agree on a set charge, including of all parts and labour rates. This means you won’t be presented with any more costs and an experienced plumber should be happy to work in this way in a lot of scenarios. There are some times when a set charge cannot be set, an example of when is urgent callouts for work such as burst pipes or clogged drains, in these scenarios a set hourly charge should be agreed along with an estimate of length of time to carry out the work. This should give you an idea of the total price and you can keep an eye on costs as the job progresses.

While the above points will absolutely help you to decide on a good plumbing company they cannot guarantee so. A referral from colleagues or family goes a long way, helps to keep a commendable plumbing company in employment and provides them a constant supply of clients therefore they can restrain their advertising costs and hopefully pass along the windfall to you, the client.

It seemed like a good idea to store those seasonal items high up in the garage rafters – until of course it comes time to take them down.

Now you are stuck wondering the best (and safest) way to get what you need without creating an avalanche of stuff falling down around you.

Keeping your garage organized can be a more difficult endeavor than most of us realize. Stowing away those rarely used items can be a real hassle, especially if they must be stored on high shelves and cupboards. Unfortunately, putting them away is often the easy part. Getting them down can be an even bigger pain.

The first step to reaching stuff stored high up in the garage, of course, is prevention. When storing items in hard-to-reach areas, be sure that you are not just shoving them in every nook and cranny you can find.

Although it may seem tempting at the time to just get that stuff put away, think ahead to the time when you will be forced to retrieve them again. Having a mishmash of items shoved too tightly on shelves and in corners will only make it harder to get them down later. Instead, be sure to take a few extra minutes to organize your belongings in a manner that will prevent them from falling unexpectedly throughout the year, or be hard to handle when reaching them again in the future.

When getting your treasures down be sure to never climb, jump or stretch to reach them. This can cause your items to fall – or worse yet – YOU! The best way to reach high shelves and storage areas is to get yourself a solid step stool or step ladder that is designed to boost you to the spot you need to reach.

For lower shelves a one or two-step stool is usually best. There is no need to haul out a large heavy ladder when you only need to reach a few inches or feet above your head. Higher shelving may require a three-step stool or even a small step ladder for the easiest and safest reach. Just be sure that you can comfortably reach the boxes and bags you are after.

When using any type of step stool or ladder, be sure that it is standing firmly on the ground and is not leaning against a wall or larger item for support.

Always be sure that there is enough space in the garage for both you and the step stool to fit in order to reach the areas you want and need. Also, check to make sure the legs are locked in place.

Never use a wiggly step stool with loose screws or bolts. Having the right equipment is essential to your safety.

Once your chore is completed, be sure to stow your step stool in a place where you can find it easily the next time you need to reach something.

Hanging it on a wall or in a closet in a cool dry place is best for not only locating it quickly, but keeping it in tip-top shape. Remember, your step stool is a piece of household equipment that must be maintained properly to ensure that it is safe to use and works effectively when you need it.

Step stools can be handy items to have around the house to help you reach those high shelves and storage areas, especially in the garage.
